As the Director of the SHOALS CASA program, first let me thank you for your interest in the work we are doing to make a difference in the lives of abused children in our community. I believe that helping our children succeed is the best return on investment we can make for the future. Sadly, there’s a devastating picture being painted for children right now…
Illegal drug use in our community is increasing and prescription drug misuse is putting children in harm’s way. The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that thousands of children are in domestic violence shelters in their most recent report. Children who live in homes where there is domestic violence also suffer abuse or neglect at high rates: 30% to 60%. Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among youth and young adults aged 15-24 according to mental health experts.
Our economy hasn’t completely ‘bounced back’ from the recession and when parents can’t find jobs, their children suffer. More and more children are coming into the ‘system’ in our community due to these increased risks. These children need our help.
CASA is actively seeing that these vulnerable children have the attention they deserve.
I have seen the dedication of our Volunteer Advocates – and I have witnessed the difference each of them have made. The difference that CASA makes is not only seen in the present day but one that lasts for a lifetime. Yet there are still so many children in our community without a CASA Volunteer, without that someone who is committed to looking out for their best interest and expecting nothing in return.
I invite you to become a voice for child abuse victims and to support our critical work. Partner with us to protect children and preserve their dreams. Abused and neglected children are counting on us. Let’s not be the ones who let them down.
